Sinusitis is inflammation of the air spaces around the nose. When symptoms last longer than 12 weeks despite treatment, it is called chronic sinusitis — and it can affect sleep, concentration and quality of life.
Common symptoms
- Blocked or stuffy nose
- Thick nasal discharge or post-nasal drip
- Pain or pressure around the cheeks, eyes or forehead
- Reduced sense of smell
Treatment starts with medicines
Saline rinses, nasal steroid sprays and, where appropriate, a course of antibiotics or anti-allergy treatment help most patients. A nasal endoscopy and CT scan help identify blockages, polyps or a deviated septum.
When is FESS recommended?
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is advised when symptoms persist despite proper medical treatment, or when there are nasal polyps. Using a thin camera through the nostrils, the natural drainage pathways are widened — there is no cut on the face.
Most patients notice easier breathing and fewer infections within weeks. Regular follow-up and nasal care after surgery are key to long-term success.
