Tonsillitis

Infection and inflammation of the tonsils causing sore throat, fever and painful swallowing.

Overview

The tonsils are two lymph glands at the back of the throat. Tonsillitis is common in children and young adults. Occasional episodes are treated with medicines; frequent episodes, or complications like an abscess (quinsy), may need tonsillectomy.

Common symptoms

  • Sore throat and painful swallowing
  • Fever
  • Red, swollen tonsils with white patches
  • Tender neck glands
  • Bad breath

Common causes

  • Viral infections
  • Bacterial infections (e.g. streptococcus)

How it is diagnosed

  1. Throat and neck examination

  2. Throat swab or blood tests when needed

Treatment

Rest, fluids, pain relief, and antibiotics when bacterial infection is likely. If tonsillitis keeps returning (for example 5–7 episodes a year) or causes complications, coblation tonsillectomy offers a long-term solution with faster recovery.

See a doctor promptly if you have:

  • Difficulty breathing or drooling
  • Unable to swallow liquids
  • One-sided swelling with difficulty opening the mouth (possible quinsy)
  • Frequent episodes each year
