A tiny opening in the ear drum to drain fluid, with or without a grommet (ventilation tube).

Myringotomy

About Myringotomy

Fluid behind the ear drum (glue ear) is common in children and causes hearing loss and speech delay. Myringotomy drains the fluid; a grommet may be placed to keep the middle ear ventilated.

AnaesthesiaGeneral (children) or local
Duration10 – 20 minutes
Hospital staySame day
Back to routine1 – 2 days

When is it recommended?

  • Glue ear in children
  • Blocked ear with fluid
  • Recurrent acute ear infections
  • Ear pressure problems

How the procedure is done

  1. 1

    Hearing assessment

Ear examination and hearing tests (including tympanometry) confirm fluid behind the ear drum.

  2. 2

    Tiny opening

A very small cut is made in the ear drum under a microscope.

  3. 3

    Fluid drainage

The trapped fluid is gently suctioned out.

  4. 4

    Grommet (if needed)

A tiny ventilation tube may be placed to keep air entering the middle ear; it usually falls out on its own.

Benefits

Immediate improvement in hearing
Fewer ear infections
Supports speech and learning in children
Quick day-care procedure

Recovery & aftercare

Most children are back to normal the next day. Keep water out of the ears as advised while a grommet is in place. Regular check-ups follow until the ear drum has healed.

Frequently asked questions

Most grommets come out naturally in 6–12 months as the ear drum heals.

Discomfort is minimal and settles quickly.
