Nose & Sinus Condition

Chronic Sinusitis

Long-lasting inflammation of the sinuses causing blocked nose, facial pressure and post-nasal drip.

Overview

Sinusitis is inflammation of the air spaces around the nose. When symptoms last more than 12 weeks despite treatment, it is called chronic sinusitis. It may occur with or without nasal polyps and can affect sleep, smell and quality of life.

Common symptoms

  • Blocked or stuffy nose
  • Thick nasal discharge or post-nasal drip
  • Pain or pressure over cheeks, forehead or around eyes
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • Headache and tiredness

Common causes

  • Allergies
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Nasal polyps
  • Repeated colds and infections
  • Dental infections (for some maxillary sinusitis)

How it is diagnosed

  1. Nasal endoscopy

  2. CT scan of the paranasal sinuses

  3. Allergy evaluation when needed

Treatment

Medical treatment comes first: saline rinses, nasal steroid sprays, and antibiotics or anti-allergy medicines where appropriate. If symptoms persist, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) opens the blocked drainage pathways through the nose.

See a doctor promptly if you have:

  • Swelling or redness around the eye
  • Severe headache with fever
  • Double vision or reduced vision
  • Symptoms lasting more than 12 weeks

Frequently asked questions

No. A cold settles in 7–10 days; chronic sinusitis lasts for months.

Most patients improve with medicines. Surgery is advised when proper medical treatment does not help.
