Coblation Tonsillectomy: Why Recovery Is Faster and Less Painful

For many families, the biggest worry about tonsil surgery is the pain afterwards. Traditional techniques use high heat to cut and seal tissue, which can damage the surrounding area and make the throat sore for up to two weeks.

What is coblation?

Coblation (controlled ablation) uses radiofrequency energy passed through saline to gently dissolve tissue at around 40–70°C — far cooler than conventional cautery. Because the surrounding tissue is spared, patients usually experience less pain, less bleeding and faster healing.

Who needs a tonsillectomy?

  • Frequent tonsil infections (e.g. 5–7 episodes in a year)
  • Enlarged tonsils causing loud snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep
  • A peritonsillar abscess (quinsy)
  • A tonsil that looks asymmetric or suspicious

What recovery looks like

Most patients go home the same day or the next morning. Cold, soft foods are encouraged from the start, and most children return to school within 7–10 days. Pain relief is prescribed and follow-up is arranged to check healing.

If your child snores, breathes through the mouth or keeps getting sore throats, an ENT examination is the right first step.
