Tonsillectomy

About Tonsillectomy

Recommended for recurrent tonsillitis, enlarged tonsils causing snoring or sleep apnoea, peritonsillar abscess and suspicious tonsil growth. Coblation technique uses low-temperature radiofrequency energy, which means less tissue damage, less post-operative pain and a quicker return to normal eating.

  • Repeated sore throat & tonsil infections

  • Bad breath from tonsil stones

How the procedure is done

  1. 1

    Pre-operative check

Throat examination, blood tests and an anaesthesia check to make sure surgery is safe.

  2. 2

    Under general anaesthesia

You are fully asleep; the mouth is held open gently with a mouth gag.

  3. 3

    Coblation removal

The tonsils are removed through the mouth using low-temperature coblation, sealing small vessels as it goes.

  4. 4

    Recovery & discharge

Cold, soft foods and pain relief from day one; most patients go home the same day or next morning.

Recovery & aftercare

Expect a sore throat for about a week. Drink plenty of fluids, start soft foods early and take medicines as advised. Avoid spicy, hot or hard foods for 10–14 days. White patches in the throat are a normal part of healing. Contact us at once if there is any bleeding from the mouth.
