Nose & Sinus Condition

Nasal Polyps

Soft, painless swellings of the nasal and sinus lining causing blockage and loss of smell.

Overview

Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths that develop from inflamed sinus lining. They are commonly linked with allergy, asthma and chronic sinusitis. Polyps on one side only should always be examined carefully.

Common symptoms

  • Progressive nasal blockage
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Runny nose and post-nasal drip
  • Snoring
  • Facial fullness

Common causes

  • Chronic sinus inflammation
  • Allergy and asthma
  • Aspirin sensitivity in some people

How it is diagnosed

  1. Nasal endoscopy

  2. CT scan of the sinuses

  3. Biopsy if polyp is one-sided or unusual

Treatment

Steroid sprays and short courses of steroid tablets can shrink polyps. Larger or persistent polyps are removed with endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), followed by long-term nasal care to prevent recurrence.

See a doctor promptly if you have:

  • Polyp or blockage on one side only
  • Bleeding from the nose
  • Swelling around the eye or face

Frequently asked questions

Typical polyps on both sides are benign. One-sided polyps need examination to rule out other causes.

They can; regular steroid sprays and follow-up reduce recurrence.
